Phoenix grind out a deserved victory.

Phoenix made it three out of three in the League after grinding out a deserved victory at home to Thamesmead Town

The game started scrappy and indeed stayed that way throughout the first half. Jeff Duah-Kessie picked up an early yellow card for slipping into the keeper and then was on the receiving end of numerous poor challenges by the two Thamesmead centre-backs.

Phoenix earned plenty of set-pieces but could not turn them into concrete chances.

Alfie Aldridge created his own half-chances but could not convert. Good defending stopped one particular effort when Alfie broke into the box but couldn't quite beat the last man.

Half-time came as a relief as although the hosts were the better side it was a below par performance from both sides.

Fortunately the second half was totally different.

Phoenix raced out of the traps, started to knock the ball around well and it was only a matter of minutes before the improved play brought along a goal.

Kweku Ansah and Ryan Andrews linked up on the right wing leading to Andrews crossing low for Duah-Kessie. The big man let the ball run through his legs with the intention of turning and firing home left-footed but the on-rushing Zak Bryon beat him to it and fired home into the far corner. A great team goal to kick-off the second half in style.

The goal woke Thamesmead up and they had attempts to get back into it. Anidugbe, Bodkin and McCullum all went close but Phillips was a match to everything on target.

Zak Bryon had got injured whilst scoring the goal and couldn't last past the hour mark and so was replaced by Tony Robinson. Matt Neary also came on for Aldridge around the same time.

The lead was nearly doubled on 64 minutes when Kweku Ansah went through and unleashed a shot. The keeper got a hand to it, moving the ball on to the post and wide.

With the game entering the final few minutes Thamesmead were reduced to 10 men. Centre-back and Captain Leon Smith had moaned his way through the whole game and lost his temper with his own team-mates many times. His early yellow was soon repeated when he sent Robinson flying through the air. The ref was left with no choice to but to send him back to the changing room. His temper could then be heard across Barnehurst as slammed doors and banged walls. Nice guy.

That was pretty much the end of the visitors chances as even though Phoenix played with ten men for the final minutes thanks to an injury to Jack Hopkins they were able to manage the game until the whistle.

It is now 3 wins from 3 for Phoenix Sports ahead of a visit to leaders Hastings United next week.
