Kick Off

On a cold morning down at Mayplace, Phoenix took on unknown Sussex side Langton Green. Having already knocked out 2 KYL sides on their way to the Quarter Finals, Phoenix could not take the game for granted with a place in the last 4 at stake. Still without Dylan Silva (serving the last match of his suspension), Archie Roast (ankle ligaments) and Henry Leek (fractured toe) plus others due to illness, Phoenix again had to shuffle the starting line-up and only had 2 subs out of an allocated 5.

Langton started the brighter side and Phoenix looked nervy early on. Langton looked well organised and were looking to play in their quick strikers who twice gave a warning to the Phoenix defence early on - both times just off-side. They should have taken the lead when they pounced on a defensive mistake and the striker went through one-on-one with Tom Monty in the Phoenix goal but Monty closed the angle well and saved with his feet.

Now stung into action, Phoenix settled down and started to play football. Langton were organised but Phoenix were looking to switch play quickly from right to left and Charlie Hanmore and James Dyer kept find acres of room.

The opening goal came after 20 mins from a set-piece which wasn't handled by the Langton keeper or cleared by the defence and it fell nicely for Euan Corbett-Smith to slam home and make it 1-0.

Now in front, Phoenix were dominant but just couldn't find their second goal. Tiago Dos Santos, James Dyer, Tom Dolding and Charlie Hanmore all went close and Phoenix should have been further in front before half-time but Langton held firm.

The second half carried on as the first half ended. Phoenix in control but not able to get their second. The defence relatively untroubled and the midfield controlling the play.

On 54 minutes they got their reward after good build up play saw the ball fall to Tom Dolding who slotted home to make it 2-0.

Phoenix decided to ring the changes with Tom Fernandes and Tiago Dos Santos being replaced by Ryan Basham and Lucas Mvongo.

As Phoenix kept pressing for their third to put the game to bed they were caught cold. From their own corner they had committed too many bodies forward and Langton sprang on the break. The ball was played into the striker who slotted past Monty to make it 2-1 and a nervy last 10 mins for Phoenix.

Eventually, with the clock running down, Phoenix were able to keep the ball and play themselves out of trouble and see the game out.

Phoenix progress to the last 4 where they will face either Dartford Academy (Junior Premier League), Welling Utd or Sevenoaks (both KYL Central). Whoever they get will prove tough opposition but with another final in reach, the boys will go all out.
