George Mortlock competing for Team GB at the World Transplant Games in Malaga.

Our Chairman, Andy Mortlock this week waved goodbye to his son George as he jetted off to Malaga, but not for what we all might be thinking. In fact, this young sport star is ditching the sun and sangria, in favour of golf and goodwill.

Over the next week George will compete in the World Transplant Games after being selected for the Team GB golf team. In fact, over the years he has been selected for the GB team a few times, travelling to Australia in 2009 and now Malaga. He has also competed in the British Games almost every year since the age of five.

The World Transplant Games, which is a great competition and very competitive, celebrates the gift of life that all the participants received from their brave donor families, whilst encouraging more people to sign up to the organ donor register.

All the athletes competing, including George who himself received a kidney transplant at Great Ormond Street Hospital when he was just 23 months old, are ambassadors for the value of organ donation and give hope to people on transplant waiting lists - showing them that anything is still possible, and never give up hope.

Club Director and Welfare Officer, Jo Gillam said: "We at Phoenix, like his parents and family are all very proud of George, his achievements and what an absolutely lovely young man he is. We wish him the very best of luck at the tournament".

The games cover all sports, from golf, basketball and athletics, to cycling, kayaking and much more, and over the next week there is a packed schedule as teams from around the world compete to come out on top.

George kicks-off his Games campaign tomorrow as the individual tournament gets underway, with the team event following on Thursday. To keep up-to-date with his progress, visit The World Transplant Games 2017 website here.

As well as being a great opportunity for all athletes involved, The Games, which is recognised by the International Olympic Committee, actively promotes the benefits of sport at all levels, as well as fair play for transplant recipients. Once again we wish George all the very best as he competes in this fantastic tournament. Good luck George!
