The record run continues!

Ten out of Ten for Morty and Aylmer’s Men

A league win on Sunday and a cup victory the week before took Andy Mortlock and Paul Aylmer’s under 18 North team to ten victories in a row.

Up against a spirited West Wickham side on Sunday on a pitch that didn’t lend itself to quality football, Louie Hoy broke the deadlock with a trademark 25 yarder after ten minutes then followed it up with another goal twenty minutes later to put Phoenix two up. The visitors came back well getting a goal either side of the break to come back to 2-2.

West Wickham pushed strongly and it was only resolute defending that prevented them going ahead.

A brace from Joe Mortlock, one slotted into the top corner and an Exocet from outside the box put daylight between the teams only for West Wickham to grab one back and the game still looked in the balance.

Phoenix continued to battle hard and Ollie Smith smashed one in and the hard-working Joe Stowell also grabbed a well deserved goal to put the game beyond doubt at 6-3.

The previous week saw Phoenix up against Faversham in the league cup.

Suspect defending and a dubious penalty put the visitors 3-0 up after ten minutes and it looked as though Phoenix’ incredible run might come to an end but inspired by captain Billy Hally’s well taken effort, top scorer Billy Mills scored twice to take the game to extra time.

Another couple from Mills took his haul to four and Joe Stowell added one for good measure in the first period of extra time to finish the visitors off in a performance that demonstrated the hardworking, never-say-die spirit this team possesses.

Next up is a League visit to Holmesdale on Sunday.
