SCEFL First Division

Saturday 29th December

Phoenix Sports Reserves moved clear of the drop zone with a come-from-behind victory at home to fellow strugglers Meridian VP.

In a game that followed the outline of their previous match at Lewisham the Ressies dictated play before being behind at the break then turning in the style in the second half to win 2-1.

Chance after chance came in the opening 45 for our lads but each was missed and it was our visitors that took the lead with pretty much their only effort of the afternoon. To be fair it was a great effort from Brandon Hobbs, who from 25 yards fired over Mortlock in the Phoenix goal on 13 minutes.

Kameron Mendez was introduced in the second half and it was him that got the equaliser around the hour mark. The speedy young attacker left the defence for dead as he whizzed past them before slotting home.

Meridian VP were reduced to 10 men later on as their tempers began to show and they were to tempt the referee into another big decision when Mendez was brought down in the area with 2 minutes to play.

Charlie Tagg stepped up and stroked home to give the lads a deserved win and condemn our visitors to the bottom of the table.

A deserved win and another strong performance. 2019 looks full of promise for this side.
