With Cup success limited to just the FA Trophy now Phoenix were keen to put a bit of a run together to go alongside a decent start to the League campaign.

Ramsgate were first up in the Preliminary Round at the Mayplace and although they performed well it took a late equaliser to ensure they were in the hat for the next round although they will still have to get past this same opposition in the replay on Tuesday night to confirm their place in the First Round.

The hosts got off to a decent start and created a couple of good chances in the first 10 minutes. Firstly, Jack Barry put a lovely diagonal ball over the top which Kweku Ansah controlled well but with just the keeper to beat volleyed over. Shortly after, Zak Bryon got onto a ball over the top and volleyed on target but could not beat Luke Watkins in the Ramsgate goal.

The visitors worked their way into the game and although they had more of a direct style of play they were able to test but not yet beat Steve Phillips on a few occassions. Tom Chapman and Aaron Millbank with the best of the opportunites that troubled the Phoenix keeper.

On 41 minutes we had the first goal of the game. The Phoenix defence failed to clear a Ramsgate corner and allowed top scorer Rory Smith far too much time on the ball in the area which allowed him to turn, then fire into the roof of the net. A good finish but not the best defending.

Just before the break Phoenix had more disappointment when striker Jeff Duah-Kessie limped off through injury. The second half would certainly be more of a challenge now.

Ramsgate started best after the restart and fired a few warning shots without too much accuracy early on.

For the final half an hour of the game it was all Phoenix though. In the 63rd minute Tony Robinson scuffed an effort wide following good work by Lewis Clarke and Alfie Aldridge. Two minutes later the bar was rattled when a collective of players battled to get on the end of an Ashley Probets free-kick. Next, Zak Bryon headed over when he probably should have tested the keeper following a smart Clarke cross. Soon after, Aldridge rounded Watkins when put through but couldn't quite beat the man on the line from a tight angle.

The hosts kept the pressure on into the final ten minutes and thought they were level when Kyren Mundle-Smith had his effort blocked on the line. To the relief of the faithful behind the goal the equlaiser followed straight after. Lewis Clarke whipped a cross in that the keeper flapped at and after the ball bounced around the box for a bit it fell to Tarik Ibrahim who took it past a defender and smashed it home. 1-1 and a first goal for this side for Tarik.

The final 5 minutes consisted of more Phoenix pressure but they could not find the winner and once more it will be a trip to the coast for the faithful on Tuesday night.

It was a good performance from Phoenix, especially in the final half hour and one that could easily have resulted in victory. Hopefully the job gets wrapped up on Tuesday.
