Victory at West Wickham makes it 8 wins in a row!

A hat trick from league top scorer Billy Mills(pictured below) and a sublime 25 yard top corner effort from Louie Hoy saw Phoenix Under 18 North take all three points against a spirited West Wickham side on Sunday, to take their winning run to eight games.

Mill’s first was neatly dispatched following a jinking run into the area. Harry Cottee laid on an exquisite pin point cross for his second and his third came from the spot after a rash challenge from the keeper.

The final score line of 4-2 probably flattered West Wickham as were it not for a cheap penalty and a cruel flash of sunlight that must have momentarily dazzled Bobby Mortlock to allow the opposition forward’s speculative edge-of-the-box shot to go through his hands, Phoenix might have had a clean sheet.

So how is it that this new-to-the-Kent-League side have started so well this season when most of us thought they would be on the wrong end of a hiding on a few occasions by now? Is it, as Andy Mortlock and Paul Aylmer claim, simply down to sheer management genius or are there other factors at play?

There is no doubt that all the players have gelled fantastically in a short time and that they have an “All for One, One for All” mentality. It’s unthinkable that any player would shirk a tackle and it goes without saying that if you lose the ball, you’d better get it back.
But more than this, the lads look as though they are enjoying the game and revel in the good football they produce.

Remarkably, nine different players have found the scoresheet so far this season so far (league and cup);
Billy Mills 11
Harry Cottey 5
Harry Aylmer 3
Louie Hoy 3
Joe “Moretti” Stowell 3
Billy Hally 2
Ollie Smith 2
Dan Birch 1
Joe Naylor 1

…..and the way things are going, there’s a lot more to come!
