The new season kicked off with a blockbuster of a fixture as Phoenix travelled away to face last season’s KYL North winners – Cray Wanderers. There was only a point between the two sides last season and this match would give a good indication of how this season was likely to go.

Phoenix started the game well and played some good early football. It was clear early on that it was going to be a physical game as the challenges went flying in and the referee knew he had a game on his hands after the first 10 minutes.

A good early move saw Henry Leek through on goal before being brought down just outside the box. James Dyers free kick was blocked by the wall and cleared by Cray.

A little against the run of play, Cray took the lead on 15 minutes. The ball was played into the box and Phoenix failed to clear. It fell to the Cray player who smashed the ball past Tom Montgomery. Cray 1 Phoenix 0.

As the half wore on, Cray took control as Phoenix struggled to keep hold of the ball or establish any rhythm. In a disruptive half, that at times threatened to boil over, Phoenix began to lose their composure and received 2 bookings.

Phoenix came out for the second half determined to play their way back in the game. They pressed higher up the field and got their reward on 50 minutes.

Ted Green and Henry Leek closed down the Cray defenders and as the ball broke, Henry ran clear on goal, slotting past the keeper low to the right for his first goal in the Phoenix green. 1-1.

Phoenix made a change on 60 minutes as Ted Green went off and Archie Roast came on. James Dyer moved into the ‘number ten’ role with Archie playing wide left. Archie immediately went close with a curling long-range effort well saved by the Cray keeper.

Another change on 65 minutes saw Tom Dolding go off for Finn Healy out on the right.

As the game went on, Phoenix looked the more likely to score a winner. Henry Leek was almost clean through, but his heavy second touch allowed the keeper to smother the ball. Meanwhile at the other end, Phoenix limited Cray to break away opportunities. The best defence in all 3 Kent leagues last season looked solid again.

Cray had become as frustrated as Phoenix were in the first half and received 2 bookings of their own.

Time eventually ran out for either side to find a winner as the ref blew for full-time. Honours even.
