Phoenix Sports 6-2 Lydd Town

The Mayplace Ground

Phoenix Sports Reserves picked up their first points of the season thanks to a comfortable 6-2 win at home to Lydd.

Scorers, Kyren Mundle-Smith x2, Lee Bird, Andrew Dythe, Klaudio Krasniqi and Kameron Mendez.

Lydd turned up to the Mayplace just two places ahead of bottom placed Phoenix and with both teams desperate to get some points it was always going to be a well contested match.

As the rain poured down the hosts got off to a dream start to the match taking the lead just 7 minutes in. Kyren Mundle-Smith, playing centre-forward, finished a flowing passing move involving Zak Bryon, Lee Bird and Klaudio Krasniqi. His one-two on the edge of the box with Zak left the defender marking space leaving Kyren through on a one-on-one with the keeper. Kyren made no mistake placing the ball in the corner and giving Phoenix the lead.

The scores were soon to be level though. Minutes after Lydd had a goal chalked off for offside it was 1-1 as Dale Horton converted a cross from the left to get his 6th of the campaign so far.

Phoenix attacked from the restart and were ahead again within a minute. Lee Bird sneaked in off his left wing to beat the offside trap and lob the keeper to make it 2-1.

Two became three almost immediately. Similar to the first goal, Kyren Mundle-Smith was on the end of a great team move to slide the ball past the keeper and complete a superb start to the game for Del Oldfields side.

For the rest of the first half Lydd turned the game scrappy and frustrations nearly boiled over after a poor tackle from Ryan Smith. He received a yellow card which could easily have been red for the challenge and for most of the next half an hour spent most of his efforts arguing with the Phoenix bench instead of concentrating on getting his side back in it.

Half-Time - Phoenix Sports Res 3-1 Lydd Town

The ref clearly had somewhere to be after the game as he brought the teams out for the second half rather sharpish. No affect on the Phoenix boys though as before the clock struck 4 Phoenix hit number 4. Klaudio Krasniqi this time on the end of another smart passing move to drive home from the edge of the box. 4-1

Phoenix missed a few half-chances to put this game well to bed before Lydd found a way back in just before the hour mark. The ref had no choice but to point to the spot after a foul in the box and Ryan Smith stopped shouting for a minute to stroke the ball home and reduce the deficit to two. 4-2

Apart from one effort that was well saved by Harry Hepworth, Lydd were just observers for the final half an hour. Phoenix were on flames and could easily have hit another four or five. On 75 minutes they did get a 5th and it came from the surprise route of Andrew Dythe. With no need to defend, left-back AJ drove to the edge of the box before laying the ball off, fortunately he continued his run and when the keeper parried a Tariq Ibrahim shot it was AJ on hand to poke home and extend the scoreline. 5-2

Krasniqi and Ibrahim then should have both done better when shooting just wide while the otherwise impressive Zak Bryon saw his free-kick effort land in Bexleyheath High Street instead of the top corner.

A 6th was to come though and it was a classic from Kameron Mendez. The substitute was full of tricks in his short spell on the field and after turning his man inside out on 86 minutes he fired low and hard into the bottom corner to bring up goal number 6.

Full-Time - Phoenix Sports 6-2 Lydd Town

A great performance from Phoenix was finally rewarded with the three points. All that had seen the side this season knew this result was coming and to be honest it could easily have been more than six. Everyone had a great game with no poor performances.

Both sides now occupy the bottom two places of the table but now that the Reserves are off the mark it will hopefully be the start of things to come.

Lydd will need to improve but full credit to their management team that were very friendly and hopefully things improve for them soon aswell.
