Bad luck continues for Phoenix as first point eludes them again

SCEFL First Division

Kent Football United 3-1 Phoenix Sports Res.

In a very even end to end game it was the hosts that were more clinical and secured their first win of the season.

For the first half an hour Phoenix dominated possesion and knocked the ball around well, but just could not quite get a decent chances on goal. The hosts could not get to grips with the game but still almost took the lead when a looping shot came back off the bar after 15 minutes. Their huge centre-back may not have been great with his feet but his aerial prescence could cause problems from set-pieces and he came close with a header on the half hour mark.

Against the run of play Kent Football took the lead on 35 minutes. A corner was wipped in and Reece Barrett sneaked in to header past Martin Grant. Not what the visitors deserved.

Kent Football continued to play a direct style bypassing the midfield and fortunately were not rewarded for their ugly play any further leaving it 1-0 at HT.

The visitors came flying out of the traps and were almost rewarded immediately but for the post denying a Connor McCormack shot.

However the renewed effort hit the buffers a minute later when Martin Grant dropped a routine catch at the feet of Alim Sesay, leaving the Kent Football man the simple task of tapping the ball into an empty net. Grant has been superb this season and was devastated by his error. It came at the wrong time and summed up the bad luck this side is having so far.

Two became three shortly later when Kent skipper Ahmed Dean smashed in a 35 yard free-kick that Grant had no way of stopping.

To give Phoenix credit they then went on to dominate the rest of the game. The ball stayed on the floor and Macey Malyon and Klaudio Krasniqi were tireless in running the channels.

Kent continued to lump it up field strangely cheering and celebrating each hoof. A far cry from the side seen here last season.

With 15 to go Phoenix were denied a way back in by a worldy save from the Kent Football keeper. Krasniqi worked well down the right hand side before crossing to the far post where McCormack headed towards the top corner. The keeper then flew through the air to tip the ball over the bar and away. Great save.

Krasniqi was a constant threat and came close when breaking free but shooting just over in the final five minutes.

The attacker was rewarded in the final minute though as he drifted into the box played a one-two off a defender and smashed the ball home. The least that he and this side deserved.

Strangely the ref decided to play a crazy amount of added time but Kent held out to get the win and move away from Phoenix at the foot of the table.

Probably the same old summary for the Reserves as bad luck saw them not get the reward their play deserved. This was an even game between a side that played the right way and one that played ugly. Unfortunately the unattractive side won it.

Keep plugging away, that win will come soon.
