Two mistimed tackles and a missed penalty proved to be the only difference in this well contested local derby.

Phoenix started the brighter of the two teams but a few good early crosses were wasted as no one managed to get on the end of them.

The closest the hosts came to scoring came in the 24th minute when Kweku Ansah hit a cracking shot from 25 yards which looked destined for the top corner only for George Kamurasi to produce a great save getting his finger tips to the ball pushing it on to the crossbar.

Six minutes later the home side were on the attack again. Jeff Duah-Kessie latched on to a through ball but was bought down outside the area by Kamurasi who had come rushing out to try and clear. Ashley Probets took the resulting free kick curling a good ball to the far post where Danny Young met it with a good header across goal but again no one could get on the end of it.

Eight minutes from the break Greenwich Borough came close to breaking the deadlock but Steve Phillips in the Phoenix goal produced a top save denying Chinedu McKenzie who did well to steer his shot goalwards from a Tom Carlse cross.

Phoenix were made to rue their missed chances in the first half when Greenwich Borough scored twice in two minutes both from free kicks after late challenges by Gil Carvalho and Jack Hopkins.

The first one came after 55 minutes. Tom Carlse swung the free kick in which was headed across goal and there was ex Phoenix player Chinedu McKenzie to smash the ball home to put the away side one up.

They doubled their lead on 57 minutes. This time substitute Kaka Dembele scoring direct from a free kick from 25 yards.

This completely took the wind out of the home side’s sails and they didn’t look like getting back in to it until with just over a quarter of an hour remaining they were given a lifeline when Kweku Ansah was upended inside the box giving the normally reliable Ashley Probets the chance to half the deficit from the spot. He struck the ball low and hard to the keepers right but again Kamurasi kept the hosts out getting down well and producing another very good save.

The game petered out a bit for the remainder and Phoenix were left to rue missed chances and a few silly tackles which was really the only difference between the two sides but should still come out of the game with their heads held high after a decent performance against a side with a very good and experienced squad and manager.
